Fuel Tank Plumbing

Postby Clinton » Tue Mar 09, 2010 11:59 am

I need a bit of guidance. I have a tank with 1 outlet, one vent and one return outlet.

What is the purpose of the return outlet and where do I plumb this into? does this feel into a catch tank?
For safety sake should they both have return valves on them?

I don't know why your tank has a return unless it was intended for an injection engine.

I would would seal it up (a short bit of hose with a proper clip retained bung in the end is neatest).

The vent should have a non-return/rollover valve in it and should vent to the outside world (the track) and not the catch tank. This is in the 'blue book' of MSA rules (read through the rules in the 750F regs and cross ref).

I purchased an expensive rollover/non-return from DT as it was quick delivery (and shiny) but apparently there are cheaper options out there (I've heard mention of a Ducati part - have a search in the forum).

My tank has a breather a return and an outlet, I have bunged the return as max said.

I bought a one way valve for a oval stock banger car on weebay (look at item 280454239756), it was only a couple of quid brand new and is aluminium much like the expensive one max bought. Just make sure the breather is upright and pointing the correct way unlike the one on dads car which prevented a win in the wet at croft.

He came into the pits on the last lap instead of crossing the line for a win......... he said the engine was fluffing as if it was out of petrol as we watched the man on the wall waving the chequered flag next to us. Later we discovered plenty of fuel and the breather valve had been fitted horizontal not vertical.

A lot of the origional ADR tanks where for Injection, I just blocked it up, I used a fuel hose clipped to the tank with The non threaded end of a bolt clipped at the other end. Race parts 01491 822000 do a cheaper roll over valve than Tweeks (but so do Ferrari I expect)
