I am still more or less alive after welding and fibre-glassing about 16 cars, but it would have been smart to start using a mask earlier.
The main problem is having your head close over the weld when you are working and the fumes coming up under your mask. These cause flu-like symptoms and can be carcinogenic. A disposable fume mask rather than a dust mask is what you need. If I had known at the beginning how much welding we would be doing I might have got an air fed welding hood and put £50 on the price of all the cars
Ironically it was too much fresh air and sunshine that actually gave me cancer, fortunately of a mild and now cured variety.

I would also suggest you use a very good mask when grinding thoriated electrodes. Thorium is very nasty indeed.
