Batten 3 was rapidly constructed by Paul and Billy Albone just in time for the start of 2012 season, and is now owned by Bill Rutter. As the photo shows, it was originally intended to use a Tillotson. It was one of the first 750F cars to use transverse transmission. It is LHD to get a side to side balance with the engine as far to the right as possible. The design challenge with this transmission is to arrange the rear suspension around the engine and gearbox, and also to get as much of the weight as possible onto the front wheels, the tyre size being the same all round. The engine is laid 30 degrees to horizontal and has a dry sump. The gearbox was originally from a scrapyard Cinquecento chosen for its weight and ratios but proved to be frail, not unexpectedly. The clutch was simply a standard Punto pressure plate and a Cinquecento driven plate so the spline fitted the gearbox input shaft. The steel front uprights and rack are from a Royale RP26 Formula Ford, with conventional bottom wishbones and top rockers angled forwards so the front spring/shocks sit in front of the front bulkhead (weight forwards). The rear uprights are fabricated from a machined bearing housing and 2.5mm steel sheet, using Punto front bearings and hubs. The brakes are second hand AP alloy with Vitesse discs and the rears were new alloy callipers and machined down Punto discs. The wing is as large as is allowed, the intention being to run with as low an inclination as possible and so avoid a stall condition. The spaceframe is mostly 1" square 18swg ERW, because I have hit Armco in a 3/4" spaceframe car. The front shocks were old steel single adjustable Spax and the rears new single adjustable from their Classic car range. The radiator is front mounted (weight forwards!) and is a standard Punto ali/plastic. The bodywork is all fibreglass.

Thank you. The nose owes a bit to my very un-pretty F1300 car, which owes a lot to a Royale RP27. The Albones made a great job of the bodywork bucks, although some of the radii are tighter than I wanted.
